From the Gold Coast to Graceland, ploughing on through the pandemic, awarded Australian Director Baz Luhrmann has spent close to three years making a Hollywood movie about Elvis Presley! Elvis was shot in Queensland and in the US with the support of the Presley estate.

Luhrmann cast Austin Butler as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Manager Colonel Tom Parker. The story evolves around Elvis “jumping the race line” during the emerging American civil rights movement.

“The life of Elvis Presley could not be a better canvas in which to explore America in the ’50s, the ′60s and the ’70s,” said Luhrmann. “That 42 years [until his death in 1977] is three great lives put into a short period of time.”

Luhrmann said one of the challenges was showing a modern audience how strange and shocking the young Elvis was to audiences more familiar with country music, with his rock and roll look, swivelling hips and singing style.

“He was the original punk in some regards,” he said. “He was wildly provocative ... there really were riots.”
